இகலானாம் இன்னாத எல்லாம் நகலானாம்

நன்னயம் என்னும் செருக்கு.

                        (குறள் 860: இகல் அதிகாரம்)

இகலான் ஆம் - வெறுபினால் வரும் பகையாலேதான்

இன்னாத எல்லாம் - துன்பமெல்லாம் ஒருவர்க்கு

நகலான் ஆம் - மகிழ்வும் இன்பமுமாம் (நகல் - மகிழ்வு) – (இவற்றைத் தருகின்ற நல்ல நட்பு)

நன்னயம் என்னும் - நன் நயமான நற்செயல்கள் செய்தல் என்னும் (நட்பு நிலையிலேயே நடக்கும்)

செருக்கு - பெருமை, செல்வம் (ஒருவர்க்கு இருப்பின்)

துன்பமும், இன்பமும், முறையே வெறுப்பின் காரணமான பகை பற்றியும் அது இன்மை பற்றியும் வருவன என்று சொல்லி அதிகாரத்தை நிறைவு செய்கிறார்.  பகை கொண்ட உள்ளத்தாலேயே ஒருவருக்கு துன்பமெல்லாம் வந்துறும். நன்னயமான, நல்ல செயல்களைச் (நட்பின் வழி நின்று) பிறர்க்கு செய்வோர்க்கு, அதுவே பெருமையும் செல்வமுமாம்; அதன் காரணம் பற்றி வரும் மகிழ்ச்சியும், இன்பமுமாம்.

நகல் என்ற சொல், நக என்ற வேர்ச்சொல்லினின்று வருவது. அது சிரிப்பையும், அதற்குக் காராணமான மகிழ்வையும் குறிப்பது. செருக்கு என்பது ஆணவத்தைக் குறிக்கும் சொல் என்றாலும் பெருமைச், அதற்குக் காரணமாய செல்வம் இவற்றையும் குறிக்கும். இகலான் என்பதைப் இகல் கொள்ளாதவன் என்று பொருள் கொள்ளாது, இகலாலேதான், அதாவது இகலின் காரணம் பற்றி என்று பொருள்கொள்ள வேண்டும். அதேபோல், நகலான் என்பதை சிரியாதவன் என்று கொள்ளாது, நகையாலே, அதாவது மகிழ்வாலே, அதைத் தருகின்ற நல்ல நட்பினாலே என்று கொண்டுகூட்டிப் பொருள் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.

Transliteration:

igalAnAm innAda ellAm nagalAnAm

nannayam ennum serukku

igalAn Am – because of enemity fostered by enemity

innAda ellAm – all miseries set in

nagalAn Am – happiness filled with sweetness (that which are because good friendships)

nannayam ennum – all good deeds done because of such great friendship

serukku – and the pride that a person has.

Misery and happiness are because of enemity born of hatred, hostility and being devoid of that respectively – saying so vaLLuvar completes this chapter on hatred. A heart filled with hatred and enemity begets misery. Doing good to others, out of friendship begets pride and hence the happiness.

The word “nagal” comes from root of “naga” meaning smile, and the implied reason of great friendship. Similarly the word “serukku” means “arrogance”, but it also means, pride for genuine reasons. The words “igalAn” and “nagalAn” though sound to mean negative of being hatred and not smiling, in this case only stress the reasons of hatred and smile, the Tamil usage goes.

“Hatred and enemity beget misery for anyone as a sunken ship.

 The wealth of happiness and a smile are from a good friendship.
