86: (Hostility or Hatred - இகல்)

[This chapter is on hostility or feeling of hatred towards people; it is a fault to avoid in anyone. In the bigger context of friendship, this is talked about as fault to avoid. It is referred to as a disease by vaLLuvar in couple of places again. The verses show why hostility is bad, why and how to avoid such an ill posture]

இகலென்ப எல்லா உயிர்க்கும் பகலென்னும்

பண்பின்மை பாரிக்கும் நோய்.

                        (குறள் 851: இகல் அதிகாரம்)

இகலென்ப - இகழ் என்பது அதாவது மற்றவர்களை வெறுக்கின்ற அவர்களோடு முரண்பாட்டில் இருக்கின்ற பகையுணர்வு

எல்லா உயிர்க்கும் - எல்லா உயிர்களிடத்தும்

பகலென்னும் - பிரிக்கின்ற, கூடாதிருக்கின்ற

பண்பின்மை - பண்பற்ற நிலை

பாரிக்கும்  - நீடித்து நின்று சுமையாகும்

நோய் - குற்றம், வியாதி

யாரோடும் கூடாது, எல்லோரையும் வெறுத்துப், அவருடன் முரண் பட்டு, பகைக்கும் குணக்கேடானாது, இகல் என்று சொல்லப்படும். அப்பண்பற்ற நிலையானது,  நீடித்து நின்று  கொண்டவர்க்கே சுமையாகிவிடும் நோய் என்கிறது இக்குறள்.  குற்றம் பார்க்கில் சுற்றம் இல்லை என்ற வழக்கு படி குற்றமே பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு, யாரிடமும் நல்லவற்றப் பார்க்க இயலாது; அவர்களுக்கு அதனாலேயே சுற்றமும், நட்பும் அமையாது. “ஊரொடு பகைக்கின் வேரொடு கெடும்” என்பது ஔவை வாக்கு.

Transliteration:

Igalenba ellA uyirkkum pagalennum

paNbinmai pArikkum nOi

Igalenba – what hatred or hostility is

ellA uyirkkum – with one and all

pagalennum – to be in collision course and be separated ( from everyone )

paNbinmai – be of such undesirable, virtueless disposition

pArikkum – which bears as a burdensome, onerous

nOi – disease (embelmatically)

The hostile posture of “igal” means hatred towards everyone, and not being in a cohesive engagement with anyone. Such lack of virtue is an onerous disease to persons that dwell in hostility or hatred towards others – says this verse. If a person only sees only faults in others, there will be none close to him as relatives or friends, says the grand old lady poet AuvayyAr as they can never see any good in anyone. They also don’t understand the meaning of an adage, “UroDu pagaikkin vERoDu keDum“ - if one has hoslitlity towards everyone in the town, he is certain to be rooted out.

“Hostility towards everyone is a lack of virtue

 Weighing as a burdensome disease, it’s true”
