கல்லாத மேற்கொண் டொழுகல் கசடற

வல்லதூஉம் ஐயம் தரும்.

                        (குறள் 845: புல்லறிவாண்மை  அதிகாரம்)

கல்லாத - தான் கல்லாதவற்றை

மேற்கொண்(டு) ஒழுகல் - தான் கற்றதுபோல் காட்டிக்கொண்டு நடத்தல் ஒருவரை

கசடற வல்லதூஉம் - அவர் குற்றமில்லாமல் கற்று தேர்ந்த பொருள்களிலும்

ஐயம் தரும் - இவர் வல்லவர்தானா என்பதில் ஐயம் வரும்.

குறைகுடம் போன்றவர்களே, கல்லாத பொருள்களிலும் கற்றதுபோல் வீண்பெருமை பேசுவர், கற்றதுபோல் காட்டிக்கொள்வர். அத்தகையோர் புல்லறிவாளர்களே. அவர்கள் வீண்பெருமையைக் காணும்போது, அவர்கள் உண்மையிலே கற்று தேர்ந்த பொருள்களிலும் இவர் அவற்றில் வல்லவர்தானா அல்லது வீண்பெருமைதான பேசுகிறாரா என்று ஐயப்பட வைக்கும். அத்தகையோர். குறைகுடம் கூத்தாடும், நிறைகுடம் துளும்பாது அல்லவா?

Transliteration:

kallAda mERkoN Dozhugal kasaDaRa

valladUum aiyam tharum

kallAda – Even in the subjects one is not well versed

mERkoND(u) ozhugal – that person showing off as if abundantly knowledgeable

kasaDaRa valladUum – in the few subjects they may truly be well versed,

aiyam tharum –will raise doubts to others if they are truly learned in those too.

People that are like partially filled water pots, will make most noise and be vainglorious even in the subjects they are far from being well versed; they would show off. When such people are truly well versed in a few subjects also, people would wonder if they know the subject or if it is again being boastful. After all the empty vessels make most noise – as implied this verse.

“An ignorant fool of vainglory in subjects not knowledgeable

 shall be doubted even in a few he knows, as being boastful
