முகத்தின் இனிய நகாஅ அகத்தின்னா

வஞ்சரை அஞ்சப் படும்.

                        (குறள் 824: கூடாநட்பு அதிகாரம்)

முகத்தின் - தம்முடைய முகத்தில் காண்போருக்கு

இனிய நகாஅ - இனிய புன்சிரிப்பையும்

அகத்து இன்னா - தம்முடைய நெஞ்சத்தில் துன்பத்தை விளைக்கக்கூடிய நஞ்சன்ன எண்ணத்தையும் வைத்த

வஞ்சரை - வஞ்சக எண்ணம் உடையவரின் நட்பையும் (போலியானது)

அஞ்சப்படும் - ஒருவர் அஞ்சவேண்டும்

சிலர் நம்மைக்காணும்போது புன்சிரிப்போடு இருப்பர். ஆனால் தம் நெஞ்சிலே நஞ்சன்ன வஞ்சத்தைத் தேக்கி நம்மை அழிக்கும் எண்ணம் கொண்டிருப்பர். அத்தகையோரின் அணுக்கத்தை நாம் அஞ்சுதல் வேண்டும். அவர் அருகில் வராமல் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளவேண்டும், என்பது இக்குறள் கூறும் கருத்து.

அறநெறிச்சாரப் பாடல் ஒன்று இக்கருத்தையே நையாண்டியாக இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது. தேவர்கள் விழித்தகண்மூடாமல் நிற்பதற்குக் காரணம், எதிரில் நின்று, உருகுமாறு வாயால் இன்சொற்கூறி ஒருவரைப் புகழ்ந்து, அவர் அகன்ற பின்னர், அவரையே இகழ்ந்து கூறுகின்ற, கயவர்களைக் கண்டு, கண்களை மூடினால் தம்மையும் அவ்வாறு இகழுவார் என்று அஞ்சினமையே யாகும். இனி அப்பாடல்:

முன்னின் றொருவன் முகத்தினும் வாயினும்

கன்னின் றுருகக் கலந்துரைத்துப்-பின்னின்

றிழித்துரைக்கும் சான்றோரை அஞ்சியே தேவர்

விழித்திமையார் நின்ற நிலை

Transliteration:

Mugaththin iniya nagAa agaththinnA

Vanjarai anjapp paDum

Mugaththin – for those who see the face

iniya nagAa – showing sweet smile

agaththu innA – but keeping deceitful intentions inside

Vanjarai – such fraduent persons

anjapppaDum – are to be feared.

A person that has a sweet smile in his face may be full of deceitful intentions in his heart to destroy the persons who are in friendly posture. Such fraduent person and façade friendship, is to be feared and must not be considered for a friendship, says this verse.

A poem from aRanaRi chAram says the same in a sarcastic way. The reason for heavenly beings to not close their eyes, is because of the fear that people of such sweet smile on face, but deceitful inside would reproach them behind their back, if they did close their eyes even for a fraction of a second.

“Person of sweet smile, but deceitful in heart

 is fraduent in nature, must be feared for that”
