கெடுங்காலைக் கைவிடுவார் கேண்மை அடுங்காலை

உள்ளினும் உள்ளஞ் சுடும்.

                        (குறள் 799: நட்பாராய்தல் அதிகாரம்)

கெடுங்காலைக் - ஒருவர் தமக்கு கேடு வரும்போது

கைவிடுவார் -அவரைக் கைவிடுகிறவரோடு கொண்ட

கேண்மை - நட்பு

அடுங்காலை - அவரை கூற்றுவன் கொன்று தின்றபோதும்

உள்ளினும் - நினைக்குந்தோறும்

உள்ளஞ் சுடும் - நண்பர் நெருக்கடியான காலத்தில் கைவிட்டதை எண்ணி நெஞ்சமானது சுட்டெரிக்கும்

இக்குறளும் ஆராயாமல் செய்த நட்பினால் நினைந்து வருந்தக்கூடிய நிலையைச் சுட்டுகிற குறள். அதன்மூலமாக, ஆராய்ந்து நட்பினைக் கொள்ளவேண்டுமென்பதை வலியுறுத்துகிற குறள்.

ஒருவருக்கு கேடுதரும் நிகழ்வுகளின் போது, அவரை அவற்றின் தாக்கத்திலிருந்து காக்கவோ, நீக்கவோ செய்யாத நட்பு, தக்க நேரத்தில் கைவிட்டு ஒதுங்கி நின்று வேடிக்கைப் பார்க்கவும் அல்லது ஓடிப்போகவும் செய்கிற நட்பைப் போல நெஞ்சைச் சுட்டெரிக்கும் ஒன்றில்லை. அத்தகையோரை கூற்றுவன் கொன்று தின்ற போதும் நெஞ்சானது சுட்டெரிக்கும் அதை நினைக்கும் போதெல்லாம்.

இத்தகையோரைப்பற்றியும் கூறும்விதமாக, நாலடியார் பாடலொன்று:

காலாடு போழ்திற் கழிகிளைஞர் வானத்து


மேலாடு மீனின் பலராவர் - ஏலா


இடரொருவர் உற்றக்கால் ஈர்ங்குன்ற நாட!


தொடர்புடையேம் என்பார் சிலர்.

குளிர்ந்த மலைகளையுடைய நாடனே!, சாய்கால் உண்டான காலத்தில் மேலே வானத்தில் விளங்குகின்ற விண்மீன்களைப்போல நெருங்கிய உறவினர் பலராவர். ஒவ்வாத வறுமையை ஒருவர் அடைவராயின், அக்காலத்தில், நட்புடையேம் என்று உரிமை பாராட்டுவோர் சிலராவர்.

இன்னா நாற்பது பாடல் வரி இதை ஒரு வரியில் சொல்கிறது. “இன்னா,கெடும் இடம் கைவிடுவார் நட்பு”.

Transliteration:

keDunkAlaik kaivIDuvAr kENmai aDunkAlai

uLLInum uLLanj chuDum

keDunkAlaik – When someone is troubled waters

kaivIDuvAr – without being a support or even running away from them

kENmai – friendship of such people

aDunkAlai – when the death lord kills

uLLInum -  even if the though crosses the mind

uLLanj chuDum – it will burn the heart with pain (thinking of the let down or defection)

Another verse underlining the trouble caused by not thinking about the right friendship before making one and thus stressing on choosing the right friendship.

A friendship that does not protect and even run away during the times of trouble will burn a person’s heart even when the death is at his doorstep; such defection is extremely painful everytime a person thinks about it.

A verse in nAlaDiyAr says there are many people like distant stars on the sky during the troubing times. Only a few may perhaps stick around when extreme poverty strikes. The work of “innA nArpadu” says it in one line, “painful it is to have have friends that defect during crucial times”.

“Defection and letting down by friendship during the times of trouble

 is burningly painful to mind, even when death throws one in rubble
