அழச்சொல்லி அல்லது இடித்து வழக்கறிய

வல்லார்நட் பாய்ந்து கொளல்.

                        (குறள் 795: நட்பாராய்தல் அதிகாரம்)

அழச்சொல்லி - தாம் அழுது வருந்தும்படியாகவும் சொல்லி

அல்லது இடித்து - அல்லது தக்க நேரத்தில் நன்கு உரைக்கும் படியாக கண்டித்துச் சொல்லி

வழக்கு அறிய - இதுவே ஒழுங்கு நிரையென்று எடுத்துச் சொல்லி நல்வழிச் செலுத்த

வல்லார் நட்பு - வல்லவருடனான நட்பை

ஆய்ந்து கொளல் - ஆய்ந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும்

“அழஅழச் சொல்லுவார் தமர், சிரிக்கச்சிரிக்கச் சொல்லுவார் பிறர்” என்ற பழமொழியொன்றுண்டு. ஒரு நட்பு நல்ல நட்பாக இருக்குமாயின் அது நாம் அழுதாலும் பரவாயில்லை என்று, வருந்தும்படியாக நேரடியாக நம் தவறைச் சொல்லும்; எப்போது தட்டிக் கேட்டு, இடித்துரைக்க வேண்டுமோ, உரிமையோடு அவ்வாறும் செய்யும்.  இதுவே உலக வழக்கென்று, ஒழுங்கின் நிரையைச் சொல்லி நம்மை நல்வழிப்படுத்தும். அத்தகைய நட்பையே ஒருவர் ஆராய்ந்து கொள்ளவேண்டுமென்று இக்குறள் சொல்கிறது.

Transliteration:

Azhachcholli alladu iDiththu vazhakkaRiya

vallArnaT pAindu koLal

Azhachcholli – For us to weep feeling sad that somebody is hurtful with words

alladu iDiththu – or saying things in strong terms that are direct and call spade a spade

vazhakk(u) aRiya – and is able to guide in proper ways, saying the ways of the world

vallAr naTp(u) – such capable persons’ friendship

Aindu koLal – a person must consider and make.

“To weep would says ours, and laughingly would be others” is a rough translation of a Tamil adage.  For a friendship to be good, a true friend would say things that are hurtful in content but touch the truth about us directly and would even make us weep in sadness; sometimes would be stern in what they say to point out mistakes made; other times, would point to the ways of the world to mend our ways. Such is the friendship one must seek and make, says this verse.

“That who makes us cry with bitter truths, sometimes with stern words, steer

 us in the righteous path to mend us, is the friend to seek and make as near”
