அடல்தகையும் ஆற்றலும் இல்லெனினும் தானை

படைத்தகையால் பாடு பெறும்.

                        (குறள் 768: படைமாட்சி அதிகாரம்)

அடல்தகையும் - தானாக பகைமேல் சென்று போரிடும் தன்மையும்

ஆற்றலும் - தம்மேல் வந்த பகையை பொருது வெல்லும் ஆற்றலும்

இல்லெனினும் - இல்லையென்றாலும்,

தானை - ஓரு படையானது

படைத்தகையால் - அது அமைக்கபட்டிருக்கும் சீரால் (நால்வகைப்படை, வியூகம் அமைக்கும் திறன்)

பாடு பெறும் - பெருமை (சீர்) பெறும்

இக்குறள் “மின்னுவதெல்லாம் பொன்னல்ல” என்ற முதுமொழி உணர்த்துவதற்குப் புறம்பாய் உள்ளது. தாமும் போர் செய்யும் முனைப்பு இல்லாது, தம்மேல் பொருதவந்த பகையை போரிட்டு வெல்லக்கூடிய ஆற்றலும் இல்லாது இருந்தாலும், ஒருபடை, அது அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் விதத்தாலே, அதாவது நால் வகைப் படையும் (ரத, கஜ, துரக, பதாதி - தேர், யானை, குதிரை, காலாள்), எதிரிகளால் உடைத்து எளிதில் புகமுடியாத வியூகங்களும் (போர் களத்தில் படை வகுப்பமைப்பு) தரும் தோற்றப் பொலிவினாலேயே அது பெருமை பெரும் என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

பரிமேலழகர், பகைவர் கண்ட அளவிலேயே அஞ்சக்கூடிய தோற்றமுடைய அளவில் இருந்தாலே ஒரு படைக்கு அது பெருமை என்கிறார். ஓரளவுக்கு இதில் உண்மை இருந்தாலும், வெல்லும் படைக்கோ, அல்லது வீரத்தோடு போரிட்டு அழியும் படைக்கோதான் பெருமை.

Transliteration:

Adalthagaiyum ARRalum illeninum thAnai

paDaiththagaiyAl pADu peRum

Adalthagaiyum – On its own to go fight an enemie’s army

ARRalum – to face and fight the warring army of an enemy

illeninum – even both (as said above) are missing

thAnai – an army

paDaiththagaiyAl – by its organization with all divisions, the strategic planning it does

pADu peRum – gets its glory

The verse seems quite contrary to the golden adage, “all that glitters is not gold”. Though an army may not have the drive on its own to go and fight or even, is capable of facing a warring enemy in a battle field, when the war is thrusted on it, if its organization has an impressive structure with all the required divisions and the strategic placement anticipating, enemie’s ways, (with soldiers on chariots, elephants, horses and foot in adequate strength), then gives glory to it, indirectly implying a façade has value.

Parimelazhagar says, the very fearful appearance and show of might, may deter the enemies to take the step forward to fight. Though it has some truth in it, true glory to an army is when it can fight or even lose and perish honorably.

 An army full in strength of divisions, and strategy has it glory widespread”
