அழிவின்றி அறைபோகா தாகி வழிவந்த

வன்க ணதுவே படை.

                        (குறள் 764: படைமாட்சி அதிகாரம்)

அழிவின்றி - பகைவரால் தோற்கடிப்படமுடியாத

அறை போகாதாகி - பகைவரின் வஞ்சனையில் வீழாத

வழிவந்த - தொன்று தொட்டு வந்த

வன்கண் அதுவே - நெஞ்சுறுதியும் உடையதுவே

படை - படை

பகைவரால் குலைத்து அழிக்கமுடியா மறமும், பகைவரின் வஞ்சனைக்கு வீழாமையும், தொன்று தொட்டு வந்த மறத்தினால் கொண்ட நெஞ்சுறுதியும் உடையதுவே படை, என்று ஒரு படைக்குத் தேவையான மூன்று கூறுகளைக் கூறுவது இக்குறள்.

பரிமேலழகர் உரையில், “அழிவின்றி” என்பதை வீரத்தின் காரணமாக போரில் அழிக்கப்படாமை என்கிறார். “அறை போகாமை” என்பதை பகைவரின் வஞ்சனையில் வீழாத அளவுக்கு தம் அரசின்மேல் உள்ள அன்புடைமை, ஒழுக்கமுடைமை, தன்மானம் என்கிறார்.

கல்லிலே பொருந்தி நின்றான் என் தந்தை; என் கணவன் போர்களத்திலே பட்டான்; பகைவர்முன் நின்று போரிலே விழுந்தார் என்னுடைய தமையன்மார்; தன் சேனையே அழிந்தாலும், தான் அழியாது நின்று, அம்பைச் செலுத்த பகையரசன் மேல் பாய்ந்து பின்னர் முள்ளம்பன்றிபோலப் பட்டான் என்னுடைய புதல்வன் என்று உறுதிகுலையாத பண்டுதொட்டு வந்த வீரத்தைப் பேசும் தமிழ் மறப்பெண்ணைக் கொண்டாடும் புறப்பொருள் வெண்பாமாலைப் பாடலொன்று “வழிவந்த வன்கண்” என்பதைச் சொல்லுகிறப்பாடல் இதோ:

கன்னின்றா னெந்தைக்கணவன் களப்பட்டான்


முன்னின்று மொய்யவிந்தா ரென்னையர் -பின்னின்று


கைபோய்க் கணையுதைப்பக் காவலன் மேலோடி


எய்போற் கிடந்தானென் னேறு

Transliteration:

azhivinRi aRaipOgA dAgi vazhivanda

vanka NaduvE paDai

azhivinRi – With unfailing valor to not fall at the hands of enemies

aRai pOgAdAgi – Not be defeated by the guile of enemies

vazhivanda – hereditary that continues for ages

vankaN aduvE – that which has highly resolved and firm mind

paDai – is indeed an army

Valor that cannot be vanquished by enemies,  the stance of not falling for enemies guile, the resolved mind because of hereditary valor of ages are the three traits for an army.

Parimelazhagar’s commentary explains the use of specific words of this verse thus: “AzhivinRi” is because of the valor that is undeatable and hence does not perish. “aRai pOgAmai”  means not falling for enemies guile, because of the love  out of loyalty to the rule,  restrained conduct and self-respect.

A poem from “PurapporuL veNpA mAlai” talks about a valorus mother proudly talking about her father, husband, and elder brothers and finally her son that fell in the battlefield, implying the valor that has come through ages of seasoned war-field experience as a hereditary trait – a detailed explanation of the phrase “vazhivanda vankaN”

“Not perishing, not being subject to guile of enemies,

 Resolute heart as hereditary pride are traits of armies”
