உலைவிடத்து ஊறஞ்சா வன்கண் தொலைவிடத்துத்

தொல்படைக் கல்லால் அரிது.

                        (குறள் 762: படைமாட்சி அதிகாரம்)

உலைவிடத்து - தமது அரசுக்கு நடுக்குறும் இன்னல்கள் வந்துற்றபோதும்

ஊறு அஞ்சா - வரும் இடையூறுகளுக்கு அஞ்சாத

வன்கண் - நெஞ்சுறுதி, வீரமுடைமை

தொலைவிடத்துத் - அற்று தொலைந்து போகும்போதும் (ஆட்சியின் தலைமைக்கே)

தொல்படைக்கல்லால் - தொன்று தொட்டு போர்த் தொழில் பழகிய படையினருக்கே அன்றி

அரிது - கடினம் (எதிரிகளை செறுவில் எதிர்கொள்ள)

தம்முடைய அரசுக்கு, நடுக்கும் இன்னல்களும், இடையூறுகளும் வந்துற்றபோதும் அவற்றுக்கு அஞ்சாத நெஞ்சுறுதியும், வீரமுடைமையும், இல்லாமல் போகும்போதும், வெகுகாலமாக போர்த்தொழிலில் பழகிய படையினருக்கு அல்லாது, பிறருக்குக் கடினம். எது? பகைவரை எதிர்கொள்ள! 

இதில் குறிப்பாக, ஆட்சியின் தலைமைக்கு நடுக்குறும் இடையூறுகள் வருவதையும், அதனால் அத்தலைமை நெஞ்சுறுதியற்று போவதுமே சொல்லப்படுகிறது. போர்த்தொழில் பழகிய படையைப்பற்றிச் சொல்லவில்லை என்பதை உணரவேண்டும்.

Transliteration:

ulaiviDaththu URanjA vankaN tholaiviDaththuth

tholpaDaik kallAl aridhu

ulaiviDaththu – during adverse times, causing tremors for the rule

UR(u) anjA – not fearing such adverse happenings

vankaN –  resolve in mind

tholaiviDaththuth – even when that’s lost

tholpaDaikkallAl – but for the army that’s battle ready for long

aridhu – it is difficult (to face such adverse times)

During the adverse times with troubles that causing tremors to the rule, brew, the rule may lose the resolute mind or even be shaky out of fear; but for the army which has weathered many battes for a long time, it is difficult to tacke such adverse times.

It must be noted that the adverse times and the ensuing fear because of such, are implid for the rule, in this verse, not for the seasoned army. A strong seasoned army can still be effective against the enemies, during the adverse times for the rule.

“But for a seasoned army it is rare to tackle

 the adverse, not losing the minds strong will”
