கேடறியாக் கெட்ட இடத்தும் வளங்குன்றா

நாடென்ப நாட்டின் தலை.

                              (குறள் 736: நாடு அதிகாரம்)

கேடறியாக் - பகையாலும், மற்று இயற்கை அளிக்கும் கேடுகளாகிய ஏதங்கள் இல்லாமலும்

கெட்ட இடத்தும் - தவிர்க்கமுடியாமல் அவ்வாறு ஏதம் வருமாயின்

வளங்குன்றா - அதனுடைய வளப்பம் சற்றும் குறையாத

நாடென்ப - நாட்டையே

நாட்டின் தலை - மற்ற நாடுகளை ஒப்ப சிறந்த நாடாகக் கொள்ளப்படும்.

பகைவர்கள், மற்றும் இயற்கை அழிவுகள் போன்ற, எவ்வித கேடுகளும் இல்லாததும், அப்படியே அவை நேருமாயின், அவற்றாலும் நாட்டினுடைய பெருக்கமும், வளப்பமும் குன்றாத நாடே, எல்லா நாடுகளிலும் சிறந்த நாடாகக் கொள்ளப்படும். எளிய குறளால், தலை சிறந்த நாடு எது என்பதைச் சொல்லுகிற குறள். கேடறியா நாடுகள் உள்ளனவா என்பது கேள்விக்குறியே.

ஆயினும், பகைவர்களாலும், இயற்கை அழிவுகளாலும், உள்ளூர் அரசியல் சுரண்டுதல்களாலும் எவ்வளவு கேடுகள் வந்தாலும் சில நாடுகள் தங்கள் இயற்கையாக உள்ள வளங்களையும் வனப்பினையும் இழப்பதில்லை. ஆயினும் குந்தித் தின்றால் குன்றும் கரையும் என்பது போல், முடிவில் அந்த வளப்பமும், வனப்பும் கூட காணாமல் போகலாம் என்று யோசிக்க வைக்கின்ற குறள்.

Transliteration:

kEDaRiyAk keTTa iDaththum vaLankunRA

nADenba nATTin thalai

kEDaRiyAk - devoid of any calamitous happenings due to natural disasters or external enemies

keTTa iDaththum - even when such disastrous are there

vaLankunRA - not depleted in its prosperity

nADenba - such a nation

nATTin thalai - is the best among others.

A state which is devoid of any natural or man made disasters and even at the face of such disasters does not deplete in its is wealth and prosperity is the best among all the states - a verse that defines what makes a state the best among others. The question is if such a state exists today.

It is also true despite many such natural calamities, national disasters due to famine, enemies, internal looters in politicians, internal and external corporate looters, certain states thrive and do well for a long period. However prolonged looting will certainly diminish the prosperity as the resources will be steadily depleted and stolen. The verse makes us think about such possibilities.

“A nation devoid of internal and external disasters and despite

them still being prosperous is recognized among all, the best”
