ஆற்றின் அளவறிந்து கற்க அவையஞ்சா

மாற்றங் கொடுத்தற் பொருட்டு.

                        (குறள் 725: அவை அஞ்சாமை அதிகாரம்)

ஆற்றின் - ஒரு அவையானது நடக்கும் வழிமுறைகள் அதில், நிறைந்த சான்றோர், இவற்றைப் பற்றிய அறிவும்,

அளவறிந்து - அங்கு பேசுதலுக்குண்டாய சொற்பொருள், விவாத இலக்கணம் இவற்றை அறிந்தும்

கற்க - அதற்கேற்ற அளவுக்கு ஒருவர் கற்றறிந்திருக்க வேண்டும்

அவையஞ்சா - அவையினிலே பேசுதற்கு பயப்படாது

மாற்றங் - விவாதங்களிலே தக்க பதில்களைக்

கொடுத்தற் பொருட்டு. - கூறுதலுக்காக ஆயத்தம் செய்துகொள்வதற்காக

கற்றோரும் மற்றோரும் நிறைந்த அவைகளில் பேசுதலுக்கும், விவாதங்களில் தக்க பதில்களைக் கூறுதற்கும் தேவையான சொற்பொருள், மற்றும் விவாதங்களுக்கான வழிமுறை இலக்கணம் இவற்றை  அவ்வவைகளில் பேசுபவர் கற்று அறிந்திருக்க வேண்டும், என்பதே இக்குறள்.

இவ்வறிவை தருக்கம், நியாயம் என்று வடமொழி நூலார் கூறுவர்; தம்மைச் சார்ந்தோர் அவையானாலும், மாற்றாராகிய பகை, நட்பு உறவும, நிலைகளில் இருப்போர் அவையானாலும் அவையஞ்சாமல் கருத்துக்களை முன் வைப்பதற்கும், விவாதங்களில் ஈடுபடுவதற்கும் தேவையான கல்வியறிவாம் அவை.

Transliteration:

ARRin aLavaRIndhu kaRka avaiyanjA

mARRang koDuththaR poruTTu

ARRin – The ways of a learned assembly and the extent of erudition

aLavaRIndhu – knowing how to speak with the right words, meaning and logic

kaRka – be a prepared scholar to that extent

avaiyanjA – in order to be fearless of such assembly

mARRang – proper rebuttals in discussions

koDuththaR poruTTu – and to have meaningful conversations on equal footing

In the assembly of scholars and others, to speak, engage in conversations, discussions and debates, a person must be prepared to the extent of knowing right words, the intended and expressed meanings, and logic etc., say this verse.

The same are known as “tharkA and nyAya”, in Sanskrit; essential to engage in such exchanges whether it is a friendly or hostile assembly to express without fear or to participate in such discussions.
