சொலல்வல்லன் சோர்விலன் அஞ்சான் அவனை

இகல்வெல்லல் யார்க்கும் அரிது.

சொலல் வல்லன் - சொல்வன்மை உடையராகவும்

சோர்விலன் - அயர்விலாத ஊக்கமுடையனாகவும்

அஞ்சான் - எது வந்தபோது பயமின்மையோடு எதிர் கொள்ளும் துணிவுள்ளவனாகவும்

அவனை - உள்ளவரை (அமைச்சருக்குச் சொல்லப்பட்டது)

இகல் வெல்லல் - பகைநிலையில் போராடி வெல்லுதல்

யார்க்கும் - யாருக்குமே

அரிது - மிகவும் அருமையானது, கடினமானது.

அமைச்சராக இருப்பவர்கள் சொற்களை இடம் பொருள் ஏவல் அறிந்து, சுருங்கவும், தெளிவாகவும் சொல்லவேண்டும்; தளர்வில்லா, அயர்வில்லா ஊக்கமுடைத்து இருக்கவேண்டும்; எது வரினும் எதிர்கொள்ளும் மனத்திண்மையும், பயமின்மையும் வேண்டும். அத்தகையவரை யாராலும், பகைகொண்டு, போராடி வெல்லுதல் மிகவும் அரிது. இதைச் சொல்லுவதே இக்குறள்.

இராமாயணத்தில் ஒரு முக்கிய காண்டத்தையே தன்னுடைய பெயராம் “சுந்தரன்” என்னும் பெயரில் கொண்ட பெருமை உடையவன் அனுமன். சுக்ரீவனின் அமைச்சனாக இருந்த அவனை, சொல்லின் செல்வன் என்றே அழைக்கிறோம். அவனுக்கு இக்குறளில் சொல்லியிருக்கும் மூன்று குணங்களும் நிரம்பியிருந்தாலும், அவனுடைய சொற் திறத்துக்காக மிகவும் பாராட்டப்படுகிறான். மிகவும் அதிகமாக மேற்கோளாகக் காட்டப்படும், “கண்டேன் சீதையை” என்னும் சொற்றொடர், ஒரு பானை சோற்றுக்கு ஒரு சோறு பதம் என்பது போல.

Trasliteration:

Solalvallan sOrvilan anjAn avanai

igalvellAl yArkkum aridu

Solal vallan – Gifted with the power of speech,

sOrvilan – a trait of zeal and not giving up, untiring effort and

anjAn – facing any adverse situation or ordeal fearless

avanai – such person (minister)

igal vellAl – to stay in the state of enemy and win over in any battles

yArkkum – for anyone

aridu - difficult

Ministers shall always know how to speak knowing the place, reason with full comprehension of what they speak; speak clearly and concisely; they shall have untiring effort and industry; they shall face any ordeal with fearless, braveheart. Such ministers are rare to be won by anyone in any battlefield, be it verbal or real, says this verse.

In Ramayana, an entire canto has been dedicated in the name of almost a parallel hero of the epic, Hanuman. His name is “Sundaran” and is justified by his conduct in every instance. He is more known for gift of words that he uses appropriately in every context. A glowing example of his articulation is almost cited by everyone by the sentence “kaNDen sIthayai” from Kamba RamaayANam and “Drushta seethe” from sage vAlmIki. Though he is filled with all the tree traits mentioned in this verse, he is known for gift of appropriate words.

“Minister with the gift of articulation, untiring effort

And a braveheart is rarely won, by any in any fight”
