நுனிக்கொம்பர் ஏறினார் அஃதிறந் தூக்கின்

உயிர்க்கிறுதி ஆகி விடும்.

                          (குறள் 476: வலி அறிதல் அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

Nunikkombar ERinAr ahdhiRan dhUkkin

uyirkkiRudhi Agi viDum

Nunik kombar – The tip of branch of a tree

ERinAr – one who has reached that (tip of the tree branch)

ahdhiRandh(u) – wanting to climb more

Ukkin – and enthusiastically

uyirkkiRudhi – end to life

Agi viDum – it will be (because wanting clime more will result in a fall)

Inna nARpadhu has expressed the same thought of this verse in one of its verses - “neDumaram NIL kOTTuyar pAidhal innA”. This verse insists on knowing the strength of self for everyone. If a person reaches the tip of the brach of a tree and further wants to climb higher, he will sure face disaster of falling done and even losing the life.

If a person does things beyond his abilities, that will bring only disaster to him. In one of the two alternate verses, instead of the example of tree, have used the top top of hillock. Perhaps falling from a tree top may result in only bodiliy injuries and sometimes may incapacitare someone. But, falling from hillock will certainly result in death. So to emphasize the impending disaster forcefully the example has used hillock.

“Trying beyond the capabilities of self and climbing past the tip

 of the tree, only takes a person to deadly fall of diastrous slip”

தமிழிலே:

நுனிக்கொம்பர் - உயர்ந்த மரக்கிளையின் நுனிக்கு (உச்சிக்கு)

ஏறினார் - ஏறி சென்றடைந்தவர்

அஃதிறந்(து) - அதற்கு மேலும் மேலே செல்லவேண்டும் என்று

ஊக்கின் - பொருந்தாத ஆர்வத்திலே உந்தப்பட்டு செயலாற்றினால்

உயிர்க்கிறுதி - அதுவே அவர் உயிருக்கு இறுதியைத் தரும் இறப்பாக

ஆகி விடும் - ஆகிவிடும்

இன்னா நாற்பது, “நெடுமரம் நீள் கோட்டுயர் பாய்தல் இன்னா” என்று இக்குறளின் கருத்தை வழிமொழிகிறது. ஒருவர் தனது செயலாற்றலின் அளவை அறிந்து ஒழுகுதலைச் சொல்லும் குறள் இது. மரத்தின் உச்சிக்கிளையின் நுனிக்குச் சென்ற ஒருவர், அதற்கு மேலும் ஏறிச் செல்ல முற்பட்டால், அங்கிருந்து வீழ்ந்து தன் உயிரையும் இழக்க நேரிடும்.

தம் வலிமைக்கு விஞ்சிய செயல்களைச் செய்ய முற்பட்டால் ஒருவருக்கு அவை அழிவினையே தரும்.இதே எடுத்துக்காட்டைச் சொல்வதற்கு மாறாக குன்றின் உச்சியைச் சொல்கிறது மாற்றுக் குறள், அழிவு நிச்சயம் என்னும் கருத்தை வலிமையாகச் சொல்ல. குன்றின் மேலிருந்து விழுந்தால் அழிவு நிச்சயம். கிளையிலிருந்து விழுந்தால் சில நேரங்களில் முறிவுகளோடு நின்று செயலிழக்கச் செய்யலாம்.
