இன்னாது இரக்கப் படுதல் இரந்தவர்

இன்முகங் காணும் அளவு.

               (குறள் 224: ஈகை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

innAdhu irakkap paDudhal irandhavar

inmugang kANum aLavu

innAdhu – Painful it is

irakkap paDudhal – to see somebody begging for alms

irandhavar – such poor people

inmugang – they smile with the help from either self or others

kANum aLavu – until that (smile) is seen

A person of charitable quality and compassionate heart will feel painful when he/she sees a person asking for alms or help. Why is it so? First, others state of poverty affects such persons and secondly a worry and fear that they should always have the capacity to help such poor persons. But such worry is short lived, because when they see the smile in the faces of poor people that are needy, because they got the required help through self or other sources.

In puRanAnURu, a similar thought is expressed, a genuine worry of a benevolent ruler about his ability to give to poets that come looking for his support.

“Unpleasurable and worrying to see people begging for alms

 Until they are seen helped and smiling, to benevolents’ calm”

தமிழிலே:

இன்னாது - துன்பம் தருவது

இரக்கப் படுதல் - தம்மிடம் ஒருவர் இரந்து நிற்பதைக் காணும் போது

இரந்தவர் - அவ்வாறு இரப்பவர்கள்

இன்முகங் - (உதவப்பட்டு) மகிழ்வோடு இன்முகத்தவராதை

காணும் அளவு.- காணுகின்றவரைதான் அத்துன்பமும்

ஈகைப் பண்புடன், கருணை உள்ளமும் கொண்டவர்களுக்கு தம்மிடம் ஒருவர் இரந்து நிற்றலைக் காணும்போது துன்பமாக உணருவர்.அத்துன்பமானது, அவ்வாறு இரப்பவர்கள் பேணப்பட்டு முகமலர்வோடு, இன்முகத்தவராகும் வரைதான் இதனாலும் ஈகையின் சிறப்பு கூறப்படுகிறது. பிறர் இரத்தலைக்கண்டு ஏன் துன்பம் வருகிறது? ஒன்று பிறரின் வறுமை நிலையைக் கண்டு வருந்தும், இரக்ககுணம். மற்றொன்று, இரப்பாருக்கு ஒன்றீயாமை கூடுமோ, என்ற அச்சங்காரணமாகவும் இருக்கலாம் என்கிறார் பரிமேலழகர்.

புறநானூற்றில் வரும் கீழ்கண்ட வரிகள், இதே கருத்தை ஒட்டியவை. “பாடுபெறு பரிசிலன் வாடினன் பெயர்தல் எந்நாடிழந்ததனினும் நனியின்னாதென”. இது ஒரு வள்ளன்மைமிக்க அரசனின் உளமார்ந்த கவலையையும், உறுதியையும் காட்டும் சித்திரமாக உள்ளது.
