எல்லார்க்கும் நன்றாம் பணிதல் அவருள்ளும்

செல்வர்க்கே செல்வம் தகைத்து.

                         (குறள் 125: அடக்கமுடைமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

ellArkkum nandRAm paNidhal avaruLLum

selvarkkE selvam thagaiththu

ellArkkum – in general for everyone

nandRAm – a good trait and virtue to have

paNidhal  - is being polite, and self-restrained

avaruLLum – Though good for everyone, especially for

selvarkkE  - those who are wealthy

selvam – considered a better wealth

thagaiththu – qualified for that state (to be considered a better wealth)

Being polite and humble is devoid of self-bloatedness and arrogance that is born out of money, power or glory. If being submissive is added to that virtue, it adds beauty to the beauty; it is the best of the best wealth to possess.

Though this virtue is required for everyone, there is no wonder in people of nothing in general being submissive and polite to serve their gains; but it definitely adds beauty to the wealthy that have everything. We have already seen in the “affable speak” chapter that humility is the most precious jewel that one can wear.

Later in the chapters on “Honor and Character”, the following verses will also talk about humility. The verse in the “Honor” chapter will say, humility is more important when a person grows big in stature (perukkatthu vEnDum paNivu -  பெருக்கத்து வேண்டும் பணிவு).  The chapter on “Character” will say the people of character can change the minds of the enemy army with their humility (பணிதல் அதுசான்றோர் மாற்றாரை மாற்றும் படை – paNidhal adhu chAndRor mAtRArai mAtRum paDai).

Humility is a must have for the entire humanity

But for rich, is none richer than this as a priority

தமிழிலே:

எல்லார்க்கும் – பொதுவாக யாவர்க்குமே

நன்றாம் – நல்ல குணநலனாம்

பணிதல் – பணிவுடனும் அடக்கத்துடனும் இருத்தல்

அவருள்ளும் – எல்லோரும் என்றாலும், குறிப்பாக

செல்வர்க்கே – செல்வந்தர்களுக்கு (அதனால் வரும் பெருமிதமும், ஆணவமும் இன்றி அமையும்போது)

செல்வம் – மற்ற செல்வங்களை விட சிறந்த செல்வமாகக் கருதப்படும்

தகைத்து – தகுதி உடையது.

அடக்கம் என்பது பணம் மற்றும் பதவி, புகழ் இவற்றின் காரணமாக தற்பெருமையும் ஆணவமும் இன்றி அமைதல். அதோடு பணிவு சேர்ந்துகொண்டால் அது அழகுக்கு அழகு சேர்க்கும் அணிபோன்றது, செல்வத்துள் சிறந்த செல்வாமாகும் தன்மையது.

பொதுவாக எல்லோருக்குமே இருக்கவேண்டிய பண்பானாலும், ஒன்றுமே இல்லாதவர்கள் பணிவோடு இருப்பதற்கும், எல்லாம் நிறைந்து இருப்பவர்கள் பணிவோடு இருத்தலுக்கும் வேற்றுமையுண்டு.

முன்னரே கண்ட இனியவை கூறல் அதிகாரத்தில் (குறள் 95) வரும் கீழ்காணும் குறளில் பணிவுடமை அணியாகச் சொல்லப் பட்டிருப்பதைக் காணலாம்.

பணிவுடையன் இன்சொலன் ஆதல் ஒருவற்க

அணியல்ல மற்றுப் பிற.

பின்னர் வரும் குடியியலில் மானம் அதிகாரத்திலும் (குறள் 963), “பெருக்கத்து வேண்டும் பணிவு” என்பார்.  குடியியலிலேயே சான்றாண்மை அதிகாரத்தில் (குறள்: 985) உள்ள குறளில் (ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் பணிதல் அதுசான்றோர் மாற்றாரை மாற்றும் படை.)பணிதல் என்பது சான்றோர் தம் பகைவரை, பகைமையிலிருந்து மாற்றும் கருவி என்பார். இன்றும் இரண்டு குறள்கள்
