Well today has been hectic since morning. After my
long day is over, not wanting to take a break, I wanted to finish writing, what I had
planned to write about today. ! So here we go.
Once again from the “thuravaraviyal” (துறவறவியல்)
of “araththuppal” (அறத்துப்பால்), a kuraL for introspection! Though, the categorization of this kuraL
implies that it is meant for those who have renounced the commoner’s life and
have taken an ascetic path, imho, it is applicable to everyone in the world.
On a side note, while reading the kuraL, I am
seeing a lot of verses are applicable in more than one context, other than the
chapter in which they are enlisted. Sadly, I have not come across any analysis
of the appropriateness, duplicate thoughts, or connectivity of verses in
various chapters.
Most commoner’s, lost in day to day mundane life seeking
means of livelihood, don’t really have time to contemplate on things the
ascetics do. We could construe that these verses are given as “sutras” for
people that choose such a path.
This kuraL says, that the thinking, that many
things, (here mostly referring to the body, beauty, wealth, stature, power and
life itself, etc.,) in our lives are permanent, not realizing transient nature
of them, is the most inferior form intellect and is utterly dishonorable.
நில்லாத வற்றை நிலையின என்றுணரும்
புல்லறி வாண்மை கடை.
புல்லறி வாண்மை கடை.
kuraL:
331 (நிலையாமை அதிகாரம்)
nillAdhavatRai: -
things that are transient in nature
nilaiyina – permanent and will stay
forever
endRuNarum – thinking they are
(permanent)
pullarivANmai – being
the person of inferior intellect
kadai - dishonorable
If this kuraL has to be taken as a “sutra” for people that renounce and pursue an ascetic
life, does Valluvar imply that commoners, or those who live in families or
people that rule are all anyway dishonorable and there is no point in saying
this to them or they are all very honorable and they don’t need it. One would
think, more than ascetics, this kuraL would serve well non-ascetics which is
more like universal set outside ascetic set.
“Thinking, everything in life is permanent not transient
Sure will bring dishonor as a reward
for the ignorant”
