காமம் எனவொன்றோ கண்ணின்றென் நெஞ்சத்தை

யாமத்தும் ஆளும் தொழில்.

                           (குறள் 1252: நிறையழிதல் அதிகாரம்)

காமம் எனவொன்றோ - காமம் எனப்படுகின்ற ஒன்று இருக்கிறதே

கண்ணின்று - அது கருணையின்றி

என் நெஞ்சத்தை - என் நெஞ்சினை

யாமத்தும் ஆளும் - நடு இரவிலும் ஆட்கொள்கின்ற

தொழில் - ஏவலாம்.

இந்த காம வேட்கை எனப்படுகின்ற துன்பு செய்கின்ற ஒன்றிருக்கிறதே, அது சற்றும் கருணையின்றி, என்னுடைய நெஞ்சிலே, யாவரும் தத்தம் தொழிலை நிறுத்தி நீத்து ஓய்வு கொள்ளும் நடு இரவு வேளையிலும் கூட ஆட்கொண்டிருக்கிற ஏவலாம். இதுவும் கூட நெஞ்சிலே கொண்ட காமத்தை நெஞ்சோடு கிளந்து அடக்கலாம் என்ற தோழிக்குத் தலைவி கூறுவதாகவே உள்ளது.

Transliteration:

kAmam enavoNRO kaNNinRen nenjattai

yAmattum ALum thozhil

kAmam enavoNRO – what is know as lust

kaNNinR(u) – without mercy

en nenjattai – in my soul

yAmattum ALum – even in the middle of the night rules

thozhil – as if it is work.

This lust that causes misery in me, without mercy, even in the middle of the night, when everybody is resting from their daily chores and work, rules my heart. This verse is probably said the maiden in love to her friend who advises that the lust in the heart can be subdued by conversing with the heart.

Even in the middle of the night, this incessant lust

Without mercy rules, not giving my soul any rest”
