ஆவிற்கு நீரென்று இரப்பினும் நாவிற்கு

இரவின் இளிவந்த தில்.

                        (குறள் 1066: இரவச்சம் அதிகாரம்)

ஆவிற்கு - தன்னுடைய பசிக்கா இன்றி, தன்னுடைய பசுவுக்காக

நீரென்று - உண்ணீர் என்று

இரப்பினும் - யாசிப்பினும்

நாவிற்கு - கேட்கின்ற நாவுக்கு

இரவின் - அவ்வாறு யாசிப்பதினும்

இளி வந்தது இல் - வெறுக்கத்தக்கது வேறு இல்லை.

இரத்தல் வெறுக்கத்தக்கது என்பதை வலியுறுத்தும் மற்றொரு குறள். நீரின்றி உயிர்வாடும் ஒரு பசுவிற்காகப் பிறரிடம் நீர்வேண்டி யாசிப்பதும் வெறுக்கத்தக்கதே, அவ்வாறு கேட்கின்ற நாவினுற்கு என்கிறது இக்குறள்.

சுயநலமில்லாது பிற உயிரைக் காப்பாற்றவேண்டி, இரப்பது எப்படி வெறுக்கத்தக்கது என்று தெரியவில்லை. இவ்வதிகாரக் குறள்கள் சற்று குழப்பமானவைதாம்.

“இரத்தலின் ஊங்கு இளிவரல் இல்லை” என்று பொத்தம் பொதுவாக முதுமொழிக்காஞ்சி கூறுவது, இக்குறளின் கருத்தோடு இயைந்ததாகக் கொள்ளக்கூடாது. “இயல்வது கரவேல்” என்றும், “ஈவது விலக்கேல்” என்று சொன்ன ஔவையேதான், “ஏற்பது இகழ்ச்சி” என்றும் கூறினாள். அதுவும்கூட, சுயநலத்துக்காக இரப்பதைப் பற்றி வரும் ஏற்பதுதான் இகழ்ச்சியாகும். பொது நலத்துக்காகவோ, அன்றி ஒரு உயிர் காப்பதற்கோ செய்யப்படும் இரப்பு அல்ல.

Transliteration:

AviRku nIrenRu irappinum nAviRku

Iravin iLivanda dil

AviRku – Not to quell own hunger, but to feed a cow (or in general an animal)

nIrenRu – even if just water (what is freely available)

irappinum – if sought as alms

nAviRku – for the tongue so asking

Iravin – worse that such begging

iLi vanda(u) il – nothing motr despicable

Another verse stressing that begging is detestable! Even for quenching the thirst of a cow that struggles for life for lack of water supply,  begging others is despicable, for the tongue that begs, says this verse.

It is completely beyond comprehension how selfless human compassion is so detestable; The verses in this chapter are confusing for their intent and how they are conveyed.

What “Mudumozhi kAnchi” says in general terms, “there is nothing despicable than begging “, shall not be taken as an agreement with this verse. AuvayyArs’ Athich chUDi has these impressing short one liners, that say, “Never hide what you can give”, “Never not do what you can give”, glorifying giving. She has also said, “To accept  alms from others is dishonroable”, but in the context of self-serving begging. She definitely does not allude begging for welfare of others.

“Even if begging only water to quench a cows’ thirst,

 none there is more detestable for a tongue than that”

இன்றெனது குறள்:

உண்ணீரை ஆவிற்காய் கேட்டாலும் நாவிற்கு

ஒண்ணாத தில்லிரத்த லின்
