இரவார் இரப்பார்க்கொன்று ஈவர் கரவாது

கைசெய்தூண் மாலை யவர்.

                    (குறள் 1035: உழவு அதிகாரம்)

இரவார் - தாம் யாரிடமும் யாசிக்க வேண்டாதவர்

இரப்பார்க்கு - தம்மிடம் கையேந்துவார்க்கு

ஒன்று ஈவர் - அவர்க்கு வேண்டிய ஒன்றனை (உணவினை) தருவர்

கரவாது  - மறைக்காமல், வஞ்சிக்காமல்

கைசெய்து ஊண் - தம்கையால் உழுது உண்டலை

மாலையவர் - இயல்பினர், குணத்தினர்.

தம் கையால் உழவு செய்து தமக்கும் பிறர்க்கும் ஊணவு விளைவிக்கும் உழவோர், உணவுக்காகப் பிறரிடம் கையேந்தார். தம்மிடம் யாசிப்போருக்கும் அவருக்கு வேண்டிய ஒன்றினை நெஞ்சில் வஞ்சனையிலாது ஈயும் ஈகை குணம் உடையவரே உழவர் பெருமக்கள்.

கைவினை கரவேல் என்று ஆத்திச் சூடியும், இரப்போர்க்குக் கரப்பிலார் என்று சம்பந்தர் தேவாரமும் அத்தகைய கொடையுள்ளத்தினரையே கூறுகின்றன.

Translieration:

iravAr irappArkkonRu Ivar karavAdu

kaiseythUN mAlai yavar

iravAr – Those that have no need to seek alms from others

irappArkk(u) – and also those who seek alms

onRu Ivar – what they need (food), they will give

karavAdu – without withholding

kaiseyth(u) UN – what they produce with their farming

mAlaiyavar – people of such nature or demeanor.

Benevolence is in the nature of those farmers that produce with their own hard labor and tilling to feed others that raise their hands to seek the favor of food, without deceiting them or hiding the food from them.  Through this verse, vaLLuvar places farmers as all benolvent, almost equal to Godhood.

AthichooDi, a significant work of AuvayyAr says “kaivinai karavEl” meaning don’t deceit others with what your make, if they ask for help. “vinai” can be construed to be “viLai” also.

“Benevolence is in the nature of farmers that til the field;

  also they don’t beg nor refuse to feed the ones in need”
