உறுப்பொத்தல் மக்களொப்பு அன்றால் வெறுத்தக்க

பண்பொத்தல் ஒப்பதாம் ஒப்பு.

                                    (குறள் 993: பண்புடைமை அதிகாரம்)

உறுப்பு ஒத்தல் - உடம்பால், உருவால், உறுப்புகளால்

மக்கள் ஒப்பு - மனிதர்களைப் போன்றிருந்தாலும்

அன்றால் - அவர்களை மனிதர்களோடு ஒப்பாக வைக்கமுடியாது

வெறுத்தக்க - திண்ணிய, வலிமையான, செறிவான

பண்பு ஒத்தல் - பண்புடையாரோடு

ஒப்பதாம் - ஒத்திருத்தலே

ஒப்பு - மனிதரென்று ஒப்புக்கொள்ள முடியும்.

இக்குறளால் பண்பில்லாதவர்களை மனிதர்களோடு ஒப்ப முடியாது என்று பண்புடைமையை மனிதத்தன்மைக்குத் தேவையான அடையாளமாக வைக்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். மற்றவர்களை மாக்கள் என்று சொல்லாமல் சொல்லுகிறார்.

வெறும் உடம்பால், உருவால், உறுப்புகளால் மனிதர்களைப் போலிருப்பவர்களை மனிதர்களோடு ஒப்பாக வைக்கமுடியாது. செறிவான, வலிமையான பண்புகளைக் கொண்டு ஒழுகுவாரோடு ஒப்பியே அவ்வாறே ஒழுகுவாரோடு ஒருவரை மனிதர் என்று ஒப்புக்கொள்ளமுடியும்.

வெறுத்தக்க என்ற சொல் ஓரளவுக்கு குழப்புவது உண்மைதான். இதற்கு தொல்காப்பிய சூத்திரமாகன, “விறப்பும் உறப்பும் வெறுப்பும் செறிவே” என்பதற்கு இளம்பூரணம் எழுதிய உரை துணைகோளாக இருக்கிறது. புறநானூற்றுப்பாடல் 53ல், “வெறுத்த கேள்வி, விளங்கு புகழ் கபிலன்” என்று இளங்கீரனார் பாடுவதைப் பொருள் செய்கையில், “வெறுத்த” என்ற சொல்லுக்குச் “செறிந்த” என்று இளம்பூரணர் தொல்காப்பியத்தைச் சுட்டி பொருள் செய்துள்ளார்.

Transliteratrion:

uRuppoththal makkaLoppu anRAl veRuththakka

paNboththal oppadAm oppu

uRupp oththal – By body, form and features

makkaL oppu – even if looking like a humanbeing

anRAl – someone cannot be placed as a human being

veRuththakka – excellent, strong and rich in

paNb(u) oththal  - to people of character and conduct

oppadAm – the comparison

oppu – is true and valid comparison

People of no character and conduct cannot be placed among humanbeings, is what is implied in this verse, thus emphasizing the above two as essential features of a human being. Others are just biological aberrations in the form of human being is also implied here by vaLLuvar.

Just having the form, body and the features in body parts as humanbeings cannot place a person as a humanbeing. Only people of strong and excellent character and conduct be compared to true humanbeing., says this verse.

It is true that the usage of word, “veruththaka” is a bit confusing as it seemingly implies “worthy of hate”. Close observation would reveal it is not “verukkath thakka” which means “worthy of being hated”. The word “veruththakka” means “excellent and strong”. The meaning is derived from “iLam pUraNars” commentary of a line from tholkAppiyam poem 53 – “veRuththa kELvi, viLangu pugazh kapilan”.
