இகலிற்கு எதிர்சாய்தல் ஆக்கம் அதனை

மிகலூக்கின் ஊக்குமாம் கேடு.

இகலிற்கு - பகையுணர்வுக்கு

எதிர்சாய்தல் - எதிராக அதனைப் போற்றாமய் (பகையுணர்வின்கண் சாய்ந்து வீழ்ந்துபடாமை)

ஆக்கம் - வளமும் செல்வமுமாம்

அதனை - அப்பகையுணர்வை

மிகல் ஊக்கின் - கிள்ளியெறியாது, மிகைக்கும்படியாக ஊக்குவித்தால்

ஊக்குமாம் - அது எண்ணத்தில் புரையோடி, ஊக்குவிப்பது

கேடு - அழிவையே

பகையுணர்வுக்கு இடம் கொடாமல், அதன்பக்கம் சாய்ந்து வீழ்ந்துபடாமல் இருத்தலே ஒருவருக்கு எல்லா வளமும் செல்வமுமாம்; மாறாக அப்பகையுணர்வை கிள்ளியெறியாமல், அதனை மிகைக்கவிடல் அது எண்ணத்தில் ஊறி, அழிவையே ஊக்குவிக்கும். இகல், மிகல் என்ற சொற்களை வைத்து எழுதப்பட்ட மூன்றாவது குறள்.

மிகல் என்பதற்கு பெருமை என்றும் வெற்றி என்றும் பொருள்கொள்ளலாம் என்பதால், பகையுணர்விலிருப்பதை பெருமை என்றும், வெற்றியென்று கருதி, அதனை ஊக்கினால் என்ன விளையும் என்பதையும் இக்குறள் சொல்லுவதாகக் கருதலாம்.

Transliteration:

igaliRku edirsAidal Akkam adanai

migalUkkin UkkumAm kEDu

igaliRku – For the hostile posture

edirsAidal – to be against that, not leaning towards and be fallen

Akkam – is all wealth

Adanai – that hatred or hostility

migal Ukkin – encourage it to be excessive measure

UkkumAm – even that thought will encourage and bring about

kEDu – destruction.

Not yielding more to hostility towards others, or in other words leaning on the side of hatred will bring all wealth to a person. Instead, if he harbors more hatred, not getting rid of it, it will seep deep in the mind and will only encourage destruction to be set in. out of the four verse with the same words, “igal” and “migal”, in this chapter, this verse is the third verse.

The word “migal” means “excess”, “pride”, and “ victory”, Though it seems natural to go with the first meaning – “excess”, other two also make sense. Some people, out of their stupidity, think, hostility is a matter of pride or a victory to their foolish stance. If they only encourage such thought, what will come to them is what is expressed in this verse clearly.

“Standing opposed to hatred, hostility is one’s wealth

 Excess of it encourages destruction looming in stealth”

மிகல்மேவல் மெய்ப்பொருள் காணார் இகல்மேவல்

இன்னா அறிவி னவர்.

                        (குறள் 857: இகல் அதிகாரம்)

மிகல் மேவல் - வாழ்வில் வெற்றிதருகின்ற

மெய்ப்பொருள் - உண்மைப்பொருள்களை (நீதி நூல்களும் சான்றோர்களும் கூறுவதை)

காணார் - தேவையென்று உணராதவர், கண்முன் இருந்தும் காணாத அறிவுக் குருடர்கள்

இகல்மேவல் - பகை ஒன்றை மட்டுமே போற்றி

இன்னா - தீயனவற்றைத் தருகின்ற

அறிவினவர் - புல்லறிவினை உடையவர்கள்

பகையொன்றே பாராட்டுகின்றவர்கள் தீயனவற்றை மட்டுமே கொள்ளுகின்ற புல்லறிவினர், அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் வெற்றி தருகின்ற உண்மைப் பொருள்களை உணர்த்துகின்ற நீதி நூல்களும், சான்றோர்களும் கூறுவனவற்றை தேவையென்று உணராதவர்கள், கண்முன் நன்மைத் தருவன இருந்தும் காணாத அறிவுக் குருடர்கள், என்கிறது இக்குறள்.

கல்வி அதிகாரத்தின் கண் கற்ற, “கண்ணுடையர் என்பவர் கற்றோர் முகத்திரண்டு புண்ணுடையர் கல்லாதவர்” என்ற குறளை நினைவு கூறலாம். கண்முன் இருக்கும் அறிவைக் கல்லாதவனை கண்கள் இருக்குமிடத்தில் இரண்டு புண்களே கொண்டவன் என்று இழித்துரைத்தது இங்கும் பொருந்தும்

Transliteration:

migalmEval meypporuL kANAR igalmEval

iNNa aRivi navar

migal mEval – that which gives success in life

meypporuL – the books of ethics as well words of wisemen

kANAR- those who don’t head to them are blind even if they have eyes

igalmEval – only minding enemity

iNNa – that which brings evil

aRivinavar – such fools they are.

Those who only foster enemity are fools that dwell only in evil deeds. They never learn and look into the books of ethics or from the learned. They don’t even realize that such learning is required for good living. They are blind to good seen before them, says this verse.

It is good to recall the verse in the chapter on education, about learned being the people truly with eyes and the fools have only wounds in the places of eyes. It is very much applicable in this context also.

“Those that dwell in hatred, enemity are fools seeking misery

 They never consider the ethical works or learned as advisory”

இகலின் மிகலினிது என்பவன் வாழ்க்கை

தவலும் கெடலும் நணித்து.

                        (குறள் 856: இகல் அதிகாரம்)

இகலின் மிகல் - பிறரோடு பகையை வளர்ப்பதே

இனிது என்பவன் - எனக்கு இனிமை பயப்பது என்றிருப்பவனுடைய

வாழ்க்கை - வாழ்வானது

தவலும் - வறுமையால் வருந்திக் குறைவுறும்

கெடலும் - அதன்பின் அழிவுறுதலும்

நணித்து - நடைபெறும் விரைவில்

சிலருக்கு எல்லோரோடும் பகையுறவிலேயே இருப்பது பிடித்திருக்கிறது. அதனால் அதை மேலும் வளர்ப்பதையே அவர்கள் விரும்புகிறார்கள். அதுவே வாழ்க்கையில் வெல்லும் வழி என்ற எண்ணமும் அவர்களுக்கு இருக்கிறது. அத்தகையோரது வாழ்வு குறைவுற்று, வறுமையால் வருந்தி, பின்பு அழிவுறுதலும் விரைவில் நடைபெறும்.

பகைமை வளர்ப்பது காழ்ப்புணர்ச்சி, வெறுப்புணர்ச்சி இவற்றையே. இவையிரண்டும் நட்பென்னும் சொல்லுக்கே பகையாகி, எவரையும் நட்புறவில் நிலைக்கவிடாதவை. நட்பில்லா மனிதர் வாழ்வில் பெறுவதற்கு ஒன்றுமிராது. அவர்கள் வெற்றிகளென நினைப்பவையும் தற்காலிகமானவையே. அவையும் இழப்புகளாக முடிந்து, அவர்களது, வாழ்க்கை அழிவுக்கு விரைந்து செல்லும் என்பதையே இக்குறள் உணர்த்துகிறது.

Transliteration:

Igalin migalinidu enbavan vAzhkkai

Thavalum keDalum naNiththu

Igalin migal – To foster enemity with others

inidu enbavan – that who says it is sweet and relishable to be successful.

vAzhkkai – their life

Thavalum – will suffer and diminish in stature of life

keDalum – and ruin of their life

naNiththu – is also near.

Some people gloat in making enemies and instead of trying to defuse enemity, they take pleasure in nurturing it further and truly believe that to be the recipe for their success. Such people will diminish in their stature and ruin in their life will be nearer and sooner, says this verse. After all enemity begets bitterness and deciimates any possibilty of friendship from any corner. Being devoid of friendships makes one lose everything, even the temporary gains and will render him with nothing and that too sooner than later is what is implied by this verse.

“Gloating in fostering enemity for temporary gains, a person falls

in stature, loses everthing; his destruction nearer, never stalls”

பகைவளர்ப்பே பாங்கென்பான் வாழ்வுறும் பாழ்வும்

நகைபட் டழிவும் விரைந்து
