மறம்மானம் மாண்ட வழிச்செலவு தேற்றம்

எனநான்கே ஏமம் படைக்கு.

மறம் - வீரம்

மானம் - பெருமையும் மதிப்பும்

மாண்ட வழிச்செலவு - முன்னோர்வழிவந்த சிறந்த படைத்திற வழிகள்

தேற்றம் - உரமிக்க நெஞ்சம் (அரனுக்கு நம்பிக்கையாயிருத்தல் என்பார் பரிமேலழகர்)

என நான்கே - எனப்படும் நான்குமே

ஏமம் - காக்கும் அரண் போன்றவையாம்

படைக்கு - ஒரு சேனைக்கு

இக்குறள் ஒரு சேனைக்குத் தேவையானவையாக வீரம், தம்முடைய பெருமையும், மதிப்பையும் இழக்காமை, முன்னோர் வகுத்துத் தந்த, படையைச் செலுத்தும், நல்வழிமுறைகள் மற்றும் குலையாத நெஞ்சுரம் என்ற நான்கும் என்கிறது. இவை நான்குமே ஒரு படையைக் காக்கும் அரண் போன்றதாம்.

Transliteration:

maRammAnam mANDa vazhichelavu tERRam

enanAngE Emam pADaikku

maRam - valor

mAnam - honour

mANDa vazhichelavu – glorious path paved by illustrious predecessors

tERRam – resolute heart

ena nAngE – these four are

Emam – the protection

pADaikku – for an army

This verse lists four must-have attributes for an army. They are valor that can face the enemy at the war front, honor that does compromise for any lures, following glorious path of warefare paved by illustrious predecessors and the resolute heart that does not give up. Only these four can be the best protection for an army.

“Valor, honor, following the good path of predecessors and confidence

 are the four attributes required as a safeguard for an army of eminence”

வீரமெவ்வம் முன்னோர்தம் நல்வழி நெஞ்சுரம்

சேரநான்கும் சேனைக்கு காப்பு

(வீரம், எவ்வம், முன்னோர்தம் நல்வழி, நெஞ்சில் உரம் (இவை) சேர நான்கும் சேனக்கு ஏமம்)

 எவ்வம் - மானம்; ஏமம் - வலிமை, காக்கின்ற அரண் போன்றது
