அறன்நோக்கி ஆற்றுங்கொல் வையம் புறன்நோக்கிப்

புன்சொல் உரைப்பான் பொறை.

                              (குறள் 189: புறங்கூறாமை அதிகாரம்)

Transliteration:

aRannOkki aRRungkol vayyam puRannOkkip

punsol uraippAn poRai

aRannOkki  - Resolved that this is the virtue meant for itself

aRRungkol  - and perform that dutyfully

vayyam  - this earth

puRannOkkip- Slandering others

punsol  -  words of blame

uraippAn – who speaks them

poRai – his burden on this earth

Slander is a lowly crime among all the crimes. Bearing is the prime ordained virtue for the earth.  Though an unbearable burden, standing by its own virtuous code of bearing, the earth is able to bear the slanderer that speaks words of blame about others. Slanderers indeed weigh down on earth.

This verse blames the slanderous talk especially behind someone’s back. Within the confines or the scope of this chapter, it is valid. But somehow the verse seems to be glorifying earth’s patience more than the speaking the ill of slander. We wonder what the need is for vaLLUvar to read scroll of honor for earth! God knows! Perhaps, if someone has asked as to why the earth still bears these worthless lives and gives them abode, he could have pointed to that being the ordained virtue of earth.

“Earth bears the slanderer, as a heavy burden

 As its bounden virtuous duty though it is laden”

அறன்நோக்கி - இதுவே எனக்கு உரித்தான அறம் என்று

ஆற்றுங்கொல் – பொறுமையாக இருக்கிறது

வையம் - இப்பூமியானது

புறன்நோக்கிப் – பிறரைப் புறம்பேசி

புன்சொல் - பழிச்சொற்களைச்

உரைப்பான் - சொல்லுகிறவருடைய

பொறை – உடல் சுமையை

புறம்பேசுவது எல்லாகுற்றங்களிலும் கீழான குற்றம் என்பதால், தாங்குவதையே தன்னுடைய கடமையாகக் கொண்ட பூமிக்கும் இது ஒரு தாளவொண்ணா சுமையாயிருந்தும், அறத்தின் வழி நின்று பிறரைப் பற்றி புறம் பேசி பழிச்சொற்களை சொல்லுகிறவரையும் இப்பூமி தாங்குகிறது.

புறம் பேசுகிறவர்கள் பூமிக்குச் சுமைபோலே என்ற கருத்தை முன்வைக்கிறது இக்குறள்!

இக்குறள் புறம்பேசுதலை கீழான குற்றம் என்கிறது, இவ்வதிகாரத்தின் வரைக்குட்பட்டு. அது பொருத்தமே! அதையும் விட, பூமியின் பொறுமையை பாராட்டிப்பேசுவதுதான் உயர்ந்து ஒலிக்கிறது. பூமிக்குப் பாராட்டு பத்திரம் வாசிக்கவேண்டியது எதற்காக. என்பது வள்ளுவருக்கே வெளிச்சம். இது எதற்காக இப்படிப்பட்டவர்களை இப்பூமி தாங்குகிறது என்று யாரேனும் கேட்டிருந்தால், அதற்காகச் சொல்லப்பட்ட குறளாயிருக்கலாம்!

புறம்பேசி புன்சுமையை தம்கடனாய் தாங்கி

அறமாற்றும் போலும் உலகு
